Friends of refugee Parent (FRP) project

FRP assists refugees and parents with risk and crisis intervention and English as Second Language (ESL) development. Emphasis on

“School Homework and Reading”.

Refugee children are coming into American schools very much behind. Schools and language (English) are different; the food (school meal) is different and often times these children go hungry in school because they are not accustomed to type of food; many don’t have helper at homes for school homework and assignments because some parents do not read and write; they often become discouraged leading to low-performance, truancy, and dropouts.

 .

FRP helps facilitate youth involvement in local activities to increase academic performance, cultural pride and recognition,

leadership skills, self-worth, empowerment, and re-discover and strengthen their voices.

Extra-curricular after school activities include participating in cultural arts and expression, sports, youth leadership and organizing opportunities, church and media production.

FRP is made up of dedicated volunteers including: teachers, social workers, college students, business persons, medical personnel, etc.

Pre-Employment and Job Ready Orientation

Program offers access to computer and internet, and computer skill training. Program assists job-seekers with resume and cover letter preparation. Upon completion of program, participants (youth and adults) will receive donated computers.

Staff members work with  adult job seekers to assess employment goals, make referrals, provide job search and job retention orientation, application and resume procedures, etc.

Who is a refugee?

Refugee is any person who is unable to return to his or her own country because of persecution or well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion. Unlike immigrants and other, who have voluntarily chosen to leave their countries of origin, refugees have been forced to flee their countries of origin and have been accepted to live in another country. Many of these refugees have lost everything - no clothes and no money to secure the basic necessities. Refugees are eligible for the same assistance, benefits and other social services as citizens. These programs include: CalWORKs, Food Stamps, Medi-Cal, SSI/SSP, housing, employment, job training, child care, financial aid, education and general relief.
